One Community

The One Community project is in the process of updating the existing version of the underlying Elgg software. Although originally conceived as a social networking project with a distinctively educational feel, the online environment that has been created is increasingly being seen as an online collaboration environment. It provides shared file space for both individuals and groups. It has a good blogging tool and a wiki tool. Unfortunately, the discussion forum tool has been heavily criticised and is not recommended in its current version. Several SWan groups and projects have found One Community particularly useful to provide secure shared storage which can be easily accessed by members from any of the three SWan institutions. It is particularly helpful that both staff and students can log on using their normal institutional usernames and passwords. The challenge for the year ahead will be to encourage greater take-up of this environment, particularly from students. One Community is available at: http://one.swlacademicnetwork.ac.uk
