She was looking at the impact of HIV1 and HIV2 infection on lymphocytes, as part of an MRC collaborative project. In April she returned for two months and is due to re-visit the Fajara lab, one of several MRC labs in the sub-Sahara, this coming winter.

“Prof Macallan (pictured right) told me about the project before I came over to England and it’s since evolved to become my main PhD research topic. Aside from contributing my clinical knowledge, I am collecting blood samples, ready for processing back in the UK. I’m grateful to SWan for providing some of the funds – my research grant and an IBLS Small Grant – to enable me to have this experience,” said Andrea Hegedus.

“Being a SWan student has certainly broadened my perspectives, and not just geographically. My co-supervisor, Prof Vincent Jansen (pictured) at Royal Holloway is a biological mathematician and, with my background in molecular biology, we’ve really been able to learn from each other. Through the numerous networking events, I’ve also hooked up with other SWan PhD students from totally different disciplines.”

“Improving my English still remains a challenge” said the Hungarian. However, judging by her progress to date and, with several re-visits to the mainly English speaking MRC lab on the horizon, it’s one that she’ll no doubt overcome.
