BSc in Biomedical Sciences
IBLS provides a BSc programme in Biomedical Sciences by inter-linking the already highly successful BSc Biomedical Science courses offered by Kingston University, Royal Holloway, University of London, and St George’s, University of London. The resulting programme is one of the largest in the UK, with an intake of over 300 students and a comprehensive suite of degree pathways and advanced level study options spanning the medical research spectrum.
Yr3: Module Options
An attractive feature of the IBLS partnership is the opportunity for students to take specialist study modules outside of their home institution in their third year. This significantly increases the choice, breadth and flexibility of learning and career opportunities, and also offers a more fulfilling university experience.
FAQs
We have compiled answers to a number of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) relating to these enhancements to the individual courses.
How will I be able to take advantage of modules outside of my own institution?
Selection of students will be on the basis of academic results from years 1 and 2, with results from year 2 having particular significance.
Will I have to travel to access these extra module choices?
Although some limited travel between the institutions might be necessary, the modules will be primarily delivered via state-of-the-art audiovisual links between the three institutions. A number of practical laboratories will also be offered. These will ensure that students across the institutions share a common experience when studying modules jointly.
Do I have to apply to a different UCAS course?
No. You should apply to the institution of your choice as per normal.
Can I apply to study the BSc at one of the other universities if I am unsuccessful with my first choice?
Your application will be considered through clearing. You should contact the relevant institution on one of the following numbers:
Kingston 020 8547 2000
Royal Holloway 01784 443377
St George's 020 8725 0499
Which institution will I receive my degree from?
Normally you will receive your degree from your ‘home’ institution, although in exceptional circumstances you may be permitted to transfer institutions prior to the start of the final year.

Biotechnology PgCert/PgDip/MSc
IBLS is offering a postgraduate course in Biotechnology from September 2009. This course is being provided by Kingston University, with one module provided by Royal Holloway, University of London and St George’s, University of London. It includes work on a project that may be carried out at any of the three universities.
Using state-of-the-art molecular and genetic technology to enhance biological organisms and their products, biotechnology develops novel solutions to medical, environmental and agricultural issues. It is a rapidly developing field of research and industry, and is widely regarded as a major technology of the 21st century.
Biotechnology brings together skills from a wide range of disciplines, including biology, chemistry and computer science. These skills will provide many employment opportunities in the emerging global biotechnology industries.
This course is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the biotechnology sector – whether in the multi-national biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry or the smaller companies exploiting new innovations in the field. It will also prepare you to pursue a research career at a university or in industry.
If you are interested in such careers and have a good first degree in a biological science or biotechnology, with a strong emphasis on genetics and molecular biology, the course is ideal.
