IPI is using the expertise of all three universities to develop innovative programmes for new and evolving roles that will meet the changing needs of health and social care providers. To date, four new courses have been developed:
- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Informatics
- PgDip Phyisician Assistant Studies
- Foundation Degree – Long Term Conditions
- Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Health Informatics.
BSc (Hons) Biomedical Informatics
The Biomedical Informatics degree is a combination of healthcare, information science and computing. The course focuses on the impact of information technology on the delivery of healthcare and how information systems are managed within it. It is the only undergraduate informatics programme in the UK based on the same site as a hospital, giving students access to hands-on experience and expertise in a healthcare environment.
The course is full time and taught at St George’s. There are generally activities each day Monday to Friday (teaching hours are from 9am to 6pm), with breaks for self directed learning. Activities include lectures, computer labs, small group tutorials, external visits, case studies and visits from external panels.
For further information please contact the Course Director, Dr Andrew Singleton or click for further details.
Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in Physician Assistant Studies
The physician assistant role is a new healthcare professional role, trained in a medical model to extend a physician’s care to patients. The role is adapted from the 40 year success of the U.S. physician assistant role. The Dept. of Health developed a core competence and curriculum framework from which the UK Association of Physician Assistants (UKAPA) is pursuing registration and prescription authority.
The course accepts candidates with a degree in biomedical, health or life sciences at 2:2 or better, strong communication skills and demonstrated interest in healthcare.
The course covers basic medical sciences, critical analysis of evidence, clinical communication and clinical examination skills and a broad survey of clinical medicine. Students spend a day/week in clinical placement in the first year and have full time clinical placement in the second year. Throughout the course learning is facilitated in small groups as students develop the life long learning skills essential to maintaining their professional skills. Students are required to pass a national written and practical examination before the will be able to practice. They will be required to recertify every five years.
