Access to Resources for SWan Students from Kingston University and St George’s, University of London

Royal Holloway network login

When a SWan student from Kingston or St George’s enrolls onto a SWan course, information will be sent by the home institution to Royal Holloway to create a record for that student on the Royal Holloway student records system. Once this has been done, an email will be sent by Royal Holloway to the student to give them their Royal Holloway network username, password and barcode number. The barcode number would normally be provided on the Royal Holloway College Card but for SWan students will be issued whether or not they apply for a College Card. This Royal Holloway network login information and barcode number are the keys to obtaining online access to Royal Holloway resources.

Royal Holloway portal – Campus Connect

In order to access online resources and information at Royal Holloway, you should login to the portal, which is called Campus Connect:

- http://campus-connect.rhul.ac.uk weblink

Campus Connect is configured according to your “role”. SWan students from Kingston and St George’s are differentiated from Royal Holloway students, so you will get a special view of Campus Connect tailored to the needs of SWan students. You should see the following tabs:

Home:

    • This tab contains many useful links, below which is a very useful search function for the RHUL Email Directory to find the contact details for named people.

    Study:

  • This tab is only relevant if you are taking an optional module at Royal Holloway.

Library:

    • A useful tab on which you will find your Library Barcode number and Library PIN number.
    • It tells you about books you have out on loan, library links and opening times.

    Personal Details:

    • Check these are correct. Note that Royal Holloway does not hold addresses for SWan students. If changes are necessary, please update your details at your home institution and these changes should feed through to Royal Holloway after an overnight update.

Library Access

For information about library access, see the SWan students page on the RHUL library website.

College Cards

If you would like to use on-campus services, such as library borrowing, 24-hour PC lab access and cashless vending, you may apply for a College Card. To obtain a card, please complete the  Accessing Athens Resources Using your SG Login  application form in advance and take it to the Royal Holloway Student Administration Centre, along with a photo and your student card from your home institution. You will need to abide by the relevant Terms and Conditions.

Access to the computers

All SWan students are entitled to access the computers in the PC labs.
Please help us keep your learning environment clean and hygienic by not eating and drinking in any of the PC Labs.

Getting Started
In order to use any of the facilities provided by the Computer Centre you need a Royal Holloway network logon and network password. The network logon (computer username) is a combination of four letters and three numbers. You should receive this by email when you are registered into the student records system at Royal Holloway.

Software and hardware in the PC Labs
Royal Holloway’s Computer Centre supports a wide range of hardware and software as agreed by the Computer Users Advisory Group (made up of representatives from each academic department). Some departments also provide their own computer facilities for student use. Wherever possible, this provides a similar look and feel to the open-access equipment provided for everyone to use in the Computer Centre.

The PC Labs in the Computer Centre and around campus, along with many of those in academic departments contain PCs running Windows XP on which the campus supported software is installed. This includes:

  • Access - a database for storing and manipulating large amounts of information in a structured form

  • Excel - a spreadsheet for numerical calculations and graphics

  • Outlook - for sending and receiving e-mail

  • Dreamweaver - for preparing World Wide Web pages

  • Internet Explorer - for access to the World Wide Web

  • PowerPoint - for preparing presentations

  • Word - for general document preparation.

Certain specialist software is also supported, such as SPSS and Minitab (statistical packages), and, in collaboration with academic staff, various packages including Sibelius (music notation software) and Final Draft Pro.

The machines are provided for academic use - please read the notices on access restrictions weblink.
Look here for more information about using your own pc on the college network weblink.
